Hi Andy;

Please look up

http://www.dogsindia.com/

This website has the complete list of breeders/kennels for most of the available breeds in India and the pups available section has the classifieds.It is one of the best Indian websites i have come across related to the subject.

YOU CAN TRY YOUR LUCK IN OLX OR QUIKR BY THIS WAY YOU CAN FIND A BREEDER NEAR BY.
its better to have a look at both the parents. do your research before getting one because getting a dog requires lot of commitment. i hate people who get a puppy and after 6 month or so realize its not their cup of tea and give off their dog.

Ask. There are a few good breeders in your part of the world. Plus I have seen lots of pet dogs being walked in parts of Uttarakhand, usually people seem to prefer the big breeds like GSD, Dobermann, etc.

Online, people may not give proper feedback. Usually when writing we tend to be either too positive or too negative, and it also depends on totally unrelated factors like fights with spouses, ticking offs from bosses, etc. etc. After all, I am not facing the guy about whom I am giving feedback, so the "facebook effect" of ultra rudeness might occur.

Best would be to find a person (or more than one) in your locality, get the name of a good source, ask that source for contact numbers of some other clients, call them up and find out their satisfaction levels. A long process, but ultimately rewarding. That's what I did for my puppy. You can even talk to vets in your area (get secind, third, fourth opinions, if possible).

Since you are looking for a specific breed, find out if Samoyeds are registered breed with KCI and whether they are shown in competitions. If so, try to get a puppy from champion pedigree. Show quality, "pick of the litter", and so on. (Pick of the litter refers to the first born male). Champ pedigrees usually have good behavior genetically conditioned in them.

Nowadays puppies are flown out to the buyer across the country. It may not be possible for you to travel to, say Bangalore, and take a look at the mum & dad of the puppy. Hence the importance of pedigree. Also, always insist on KCI registration (of the litter), pedigree certificate, and microchip. Anybody who tells you that those are not important or hesitates about them, run in the opposite direction - they are probably backyard breeders, and will sell you a sick or badly-behaved puppy.
Cheers!

Andy, read up on the breeds in as many sources as possible. Wikipedia might be a good entry point (I know many people trash wiki, but it's an excellent starting point unless you want a PhD!). There are many breeds which, while looking good, may be prone to health or behavioral problems. Most large breeds, for example, are prone to hip displasia (hope I got the correct spelling). My Rottie has it in a minor way. Even though he is pedigreed, pick of the litter, and all that. Dobermanns are prone to be temperamental, for example.

Also, the physical needs should be taken into account. If you are, say working from morning till late night on a regular basis, and have very little time to take the dog for a walk, better look for dogs who do not need vigorous exercise. Similarly, very boisterous dogs will not suit families with very small kids, as the dog might playfully take a nip.

The research is damn painful, especially as you can't wait to get a dog. Trust me, every minute of the research will reward you at the end when you finally get a tiny puppy in your arms and he sniffs at you and licks your face!!
Cheers!

Essdee makes a lot of sense.

Read about the breed, know and be very clear about what you want from the dog and what the dog requires from you. Saves a lot of grief for you and the dog. I lost two dogs to hip dysplasia. Before you buy the pup, have it x-rayed and checked for hip dysplasia.

I wish Yaj posts regularly. He is a real guru on dogs.
