NEW DELHI: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly shot during celebratory firing at a wedding in Aman Vihar in outer Delhi on Wednesday evening. Police maintain that the girl was shot after she objected to some men firing in the air while dancing, shortly after the arrival of the baraat.
Police said the girl, a neighbour of the bride, was shot in the thigh. She is being treated at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital and is said to be stable. "Around 7.15pm the baraat arrived and a few men started dancing around the bridegroom. A few of them began firing in the air. When the victim requested them to stop, they shot her and fled the scene. The video footage is being analyzed and people are being question. We will soon make an arrest," said an officer.
Celebratory firing is being seen as a status symbol and it is becoming difficult to keep a tab on people carrying weapons illegally, an officer said. He added that though police have intensified their drive against illegal arms, easy access to weapons and arms licences is a major issue.
According to the special cell, the only way to discourage people from opening fire during weddings is by slapping stringent charges. "We register a case of homicide not amounting to murder in case of death and in other situations we resort to IPC 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide)," a special cell officer said.
Additional DCP (PRO) Rajan Bhagat said the Delhi Police has come up with a plan to curb celebratory firing. "We cancel the licence of wedding halls and hotels that allow guests to enter with weapons. " he said. He added that beat constables have been directed to keep an eye on potential trouble-makers at marriages.

now this is more disturbing '' easy access to weapons and arms licences is a major issue''.due to some unruly elements the rest of the legal licencee are at risk.instead of punishing the person responsible,the dcp has generalised all legal gun owners.
then, what can a beat cop with a lathe do when the celebration is with a firearm.?

Gives another denial reason to already arrogant and egoistic Licensing Authorities.
By the time investigations finish, and they realize that the weapon was indeed illegal, damage would have been done to many more Licence applicants hopes.

Easy license??? what and which way the DCP finds genuine licencee has got their licenses, easy way....??
Got to run around offices, police stations with a million documents (even a government certified document still need to be notarized etc) and finally grease there hands...
these senseless brutes use their legal/illegal arms for celebration in the mid town and CRD's and making it much harder for the legal gun owners. A new GO with severe punishment with a non-bailable warrant have to passed for using arms for celebratory purpose. And a through drive from the police patrol has be made mandatory during the wedding season to curb any such incident happening again.

What in the world possesses these guys to start firing during celebration!!!
They are not just inviting trouble to themselves but also making the people who keep arms to defend themselves in difficult times look bad.
The police and administration should refer extreme punishments to people like these rather than blaming the arms bearing community.
What kind of an officer is this who is making statements that getting a licence is easy. Does he not have any news about how the govt has made it harder for people to acquire licences. Is he not aware ???
If these revelers want to fire shots why dont they do it in a firing range where it is safe???

I quite agree. They deserve many years in Hotel Greybar for the celebratory firing.
For the deliberate shooting of the girl, I would have them dancing at the end of a rope, while attending a necktie party in their own honor. Beasts like this are not fit to live.
