Mumbai IFGians Go Leather Hunting!

Mumbai IFGians Go Leather Hunting!

This ‘MOTELY’ group of IFGians consisting of AGN, SD, Pratik & Briha who hitherto indulged in air guns took an about-turn to divert their interest in ‘BLADES’ – Thanks to Moin our fellow Mumbaikar IFGian whose love for Blades has a keener ‘Edge’ over the rest of us.

With the result AGN on his recent trip to Amritsar got himself a ‘Kirpan’ and was in desperate need for a leather sheath to contain it. He also sourced and acquired a lorry leaf spring and was keen to forge a blade out of it.

SD on the other hand had a few assorted blades and wanted to sheath them and what better way than to embark on a DIY.

Yours truly (Briha) began rummaging his cupboard and unearthed close to a dozen blades acquired over a period of time (just for the heck of it) – Pics of these will be posted shortly.

The net result was a rendezvous last week when Moin took us to a Mochi (Cobbler) to select leather for our DIY project to make sheaths for our blades.

Having selected the right material we bought our requirement. The time was around 8.30pm a time when our gastric juices began rebelling and we headed towards a local eatery to satiate our hunger.

Our orders were placed and while waiting for it to arrive, Moin regaled us with the merits of different types of steel that are used in making blades and the process thereof…

AGN who was listening with rapt attention to Moin’s spiel asked…

AGN: Tell us the difference between a, Drop POINT & Clip POINT
Moin: Ah! It’s POINT that distinguishes one blade from another

AGN: I see, but what’s the POINT of difference?
Moin: You see the difference is in the POINT

AGN: But the POINT you’re making doesn’t tell me much
Moin: Okay, let me get back to the POINT

AGN: Okay, remember the POINT I’m making is to know the difference
Moin: That’s the moot POINT

AGN: Oh! I see now there’s another POINT besides Drop & Clip
Moin: C’mon, that’s not a POINT for consideration

AGN: Then what’s the POINT
MOIN: Okay, let me get back to the POINT

By then SD, Pratik & Briha realized that the whole conversation was going away from the POINT to the POINT of no return!!!!

BTW Guys I must confess that the POINT so fascinated me, that I decided to fabricate this fictitious story of the whole thing- Just for laughs! ROTFL

Briha

Lollzzz, thank you Sir. You should have been a professional writer.

Had posted this pic on the very same day, but posting it again to compliment your post.

Also this should coerce Esddee Da to post his DIY Sheath ( the entire process) now that he's an expert in leather working..

Yeah, another evening to remember, as is usual whenever IFGians get together!

And folks, just wait for Brihaji's knife photos to come up!

Just as a heads up, I haven't started working with the thick hide as yet. Did myself a cellphone holder and a card holer / wallet with thinner chamois leather, over Saturday. Monogrammed with a hot soldering rod. The thick stuff will sit in the boot of the car till next weekend. I plan to do a sheath for the Brazialian machete with that first. For the good news: my wife's so impressed with my mochi skills, that she's asking me to make a handbag for her! Now I know what to do if I ever lose a job!!

Photos coming up shortly!
Cheers!

Another successful escapade for the notorious Mumbai choori-mochi gang.
You guys have been having so much fun lately, it almost feels like it should be illegal. :)
Wish we could join you.

Yum Yum.

Brihji, you have confused me with so many points that I have to go back to my studies again, lest Moin "Sir" fails me in my ATKT. :-) Just when I was done studying with drop point and clip point and dagger point et al he had to bring in that up swept point. And that point swept me off my feet - paav tale jameen khisuck gayi !

That mutton biryani was yummy and so were the rounds of Kolkatta Meetha Masala that followed.

BTW, Moin thanks for clearing my doubts on Rumy - as it is I stay away from Rum, Rummy and Roma ;-) That's "AWL". ;-)

Looking at our picture, I am sure IFGians thought Brihji mistyped "MOTAA" ... ROTFL

Hey Moin - Thanks for "Rumi". Now that's some magnificent piece of philosophy. :-)
I can't even spend any time on my treadmill :-( ;
it's already occupied by my out to dry towels and trousers. :-)
