Ravi Shankar has passed away

Indian sitar maestro Ravi Shankar has died in a hospital in the US, aged 92.
His family said he had been admitted to the Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego last week, but had failed to recover fully from surgery.
Shankar gained widespread international recognition through his association with The Beatles.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described him as a "national treasure and global ambassador of India's cultural heritage".
In a statement quoted by Reuters, Shankar's wife Sukanya and daughter Anoushka said he had recently undergone surgery which would have "potentially given him a new lease of life".
"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the surgeons and doctors taking care of him, his body was not able to withstand the strain of the surgery," they said.
"We were at his side when he passed away.
"Although it is a time for sorrow and sadness, it is also a time for all of us to give thanks and to be grateful that we were able to have him as a part of our lives. He will live forever in our hearts and in his music."

XL, he had a long life, but his passing is still sad news.
My memory of Ravi Shankar goes back to 1972, I went to the theater with some friends to watch the movie of "The Concert for Bangladesh." I found that the Bengali music was very interesting and moving, and I very much enjoyed it. I never followed up with listening to that music, but perhaps Shankar and his band planted a seed that took a number of years to bloom in my life.
Ravi Shankar's and Ex-Beatle George Harrison's effort to put this concert on for the relief of folks in need, who had been battered by storm, tyranny, and war, has always occupied a very sweet spot in my mind and heart, as did the other famous artists who took time off from making money to provide for the needs of others. Sad to say, there were those who failed to heed the cause of humanity and refused to show.
Ravi Shankar had a full life, which we can celebrate, and this helps to mute in small measure the loss of his passing.

Two of my favourites....Ravi Shankar and George Harrison. sad ........
Ravi Shankar was there at woodstock too, on day one. vaugely remember his line...someting about leting his music give them a high...rather than the dope !!

He lived a full life and brought the joy of Indian classical music to people all over the world - R.I.P Ravi Shankar

Undoubtedly India's greatest Sitar player. Played for one of my all time favourite groups Beatles. I was listening to "Norwegian Wood" yesterday.
Heard he has been awarded a Lifetime achievement Grammy .
