Hi friends I was watching Big B starrer Ganga ki saugandh below:

I would like to share 2 observations:

1) From 2:16:04 to 2:16:22 he has a rifle slung over his back. But suddenly at 2:16:24 it changes into a shotgun :? .

2) This appears to be a browning semi auto shotgun. The movie was released in 1978 so probably shot in 77-78 period. Were semi-autos legal then? If yes, then what happened to the ones that existed in those days?

Sem-autos long guns are still legal - on the proper license! Earlier this (PB) license was issued by the DM, by the 1970's it had become the state home deptt. Only in the mid 80's did PB licensing become the sole perogative of the MHA, thus making it next to impossible to get the relevant license... :-(

Cheers!

I deeply regret selling my Browning A-5 (Belgian made)and have never been able to shoot as well with any shotgun that replaced it. It was the classic model with rounded pistol grip, 2 3/4" chamber with 28" barrel (Modified)without the ventilated rib and with a pic of James Browning on the left side of the receiver. It never ever failed to function, pointed like a dream and always shot where I was looking.
It was bought in 1973 for Rs.3,200/= as new from Tahir Arms Stores, Mumbai and sold it when the ruling came that i was required to have the license renewed only with the State Dept. of Home. These were renewed only for a year at a time and It was very unlikely to get the renewed book back before December when deposited in the month of January of the same year. It was a feeling of insecurity that compelled me to sell it off since carrying a receipt of deposit whole year round with two more fire arms on the same license.
