Shooting Legends.Do you know any?

Post by Skyman » Mon Oct 22, 2012 11:07 pm

Hello,

Do you know any shooting legends? Who and what they did should be submitted.

I'll start off with Annie Oakley. As a teenager, she could shoot a playing card tossed in the air with a .22 on the EDGE and put several more holes in it before it landed. This was using 1860's guns and ammo. She also shot cigarettes held between her husband's teeth. She was a member of Buffalo Bill's " The wild west show ".

Do you mean trick shooters, competition shooters or game shots?

If the former then herb parson, bob munden.

For game my favourites walsingham and ripon. Of course one cant omit the Duleep singh clan, huntingfield and the german count, king of portugal and colonel peter hawker.

Competition of course digweed, kim rhode, vince hancock.

There were many amazing shots in india too.

All characters played by Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Lee van Cleef, et al.....

Corbett?

Zaitsev?

Hahya?

Maybe many unsung hunters, adventurers, travellers in India / Africa / Americas in the olden days. Getting an elephant or lion or cougar (the 4 legged kind) with a black powder muzzle loader was no mean feat.

And by the way, Annie's hubby musta have been the example of "trust thy spouse"....
Cheers!

These legends weren't famous for shooting game animals.
Look them up. They make fascinating reading

In no particular order
Thomas Plunkett
Carlos Hathcock
Simo Hahya (mentioned by Esdee)
Chuck Mawhinney
Rob Furlong
Vassily Zaitsev (mentioned by Esdee)
Ludmilla Pavlichenko
Francis Pegahmagabow
Adelbert Waldron

Karamojo Bell?
Frederick Selous?
WIlliam Cody

Chuck Mawhinney of USMC is truly a legend. I mean, taking down 16 armed men with 16 shots in 30 seconds from an m14 with AN/PVS-2 Starlight scope in pitch darkness is something. Clearly explains the tactical capabilities of a Sniper.

AK - Thats what i'm looking for - A name and why they are legends.

XL - I recognize some military snipers on that list.Hathcock is regarded as one of the best Vietnam era snipers who frustrated the cong to no end.He had a very large bounty on his head, and is famous for the " Through the eyepiece " shot.Zaitsev too dropped many Germans in the three months he was at Stalingrad and also trained many snipers who are credited with a large number of kills.

But i have the utmost respect for Hahya. He killed more than 500 enemies in less than a hundred days, with a bolt action using ONLY the iron sights beyond a thousand yards. He had only a few hours of daylight to work in the freezing winter. He disdained the use of scopes because " I will have to raise my head, presenting a larger target".He is credited with more than 800 kills overall.

William Cody dropped buffalo.Oh well. What about Wyatt Earp?
