This potentially could be purely Hate crime where crazy guys are targeting folks based on appearance although this is a fluid situation I heard there are few children as hostages. Gunman is dead so who knows what was the motive but the brave officer who engaged and killed gunman is critically injured http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/05/us/wiscon ... ?hpt=hp_t1
CNN) -- At least seven people, including a gunman shot by a police officer, have been killed in an attack on worshippers at a Sikh temple in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on Sunday, police said.
The officer was wounded but "returned fire, and that shooter was put down," said Bradley Wentlandt, the police chief in nearby Greenfield, who briefed reporters. Investigators who picked through the building afterward found four bodies inside the temple and two other victims outside, plus the gunman, Wentlandt said.

You can go to the local TV station to see if you can access the live feed.

edited to add:
The president of the Sikh Temple, Satwant Singh Kaleka, was said to be one of the shooting victims. It was not initially known if he survived.

The shootings happened at about 10:00 a.m. at the Sikh Temple, on the 7500 block of South Howell Avenue in Oak Creek.

"An officer arrived on scene. He engaged an active shooter. The officer was shot multiple times. He has been transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive," said Wentlandt. "The shooter was put down."

I just read the news on Time. I really hope that the situation is brought under control fast and no more lives are lost. Our best thoughts are with the victims and their families.

There was no TV coverage for a while here in NYC I read this n Yahoo first lets see what goes on my first reaction was whether this was fight between groups but looks like its some other chap from outside. Incidentally Punjab CM was supposed to go there and maybe half of the cabinet to attend wedding of a very rich Sikh businessman from that area ( owns big chain of gas station). Not sure if anyone from IFG goes there although Mehul does go to Sikh temple not sure whether its this one..

There is supposed to be a live news conference, but so far it is delayed, but will be forthcoming. It will be shown on CNN & Fox & the local station at http://www.620wtmj.com/

So far, not a lot of details about the shooter. Police officer that killed the shooter is in surgery for multiple gunshot wounds. Police have told witnesses not to divulge any details which could be bad for the investigation.

RIP..... all the dead. Pray God gives the families strength to withstand this.

Also pray God gives people wisdom to do away with gun-free zones. Yes, even places of worship.

This is indeed a sad state of affairs. Many innocent peacful people killed. The shooter was a "white supremicist", and his actions were a hate crime directed towards people different than himself. He was a singer in a white supremicist hate band, and no doubt wanted to practice what he preached and become famous. Fortunately for all of us, he was shot & killed like the rabid dog he was, but not before shooting a police officer 8 or 9 times as the cop tried to assist a wounded Sikh out in the car park.

This outrage is known country-wide, which has once again started the left-wing US news commentators to call for heavily regulated gun control (CNN, CBS & NBC (MSNBC), and of course, the left-wing politicians.

Why is this important to you, half-way around the world? Our (left wing)Democrat politicians and gun control groups say, "See how happy the people are in other countries, like England, Australia, India and other heavily regulated European countries, without guns. Why can't the US be like them?

Really? The people are happy about the heavy handed gun control? Not from what I've seen, so the more you make yourselves heard and fight for your rights, the better it is.

(edit] It was just reported that the leader of the temple heroically attacked the gunman with a knife, although he was shot and killed, he no doubt threw the gunman off his game, giving more people a chance to escape.

Yes, my understanding is that this person was a white power supremacist. As our Native Americans might say, he had already lived too long.

I attribute a great deal of national and international problems to racism. Personally, I would favor banning or at least cracking down on these hate groups before the subject of RKBA even comes up. Germany bans nazi parties and Singapore bans hate talk, and I think such policies are a better approach.

I would just as soon keep politics out of this thread, as I do not believe that the problem is politics or guns. The problem we are dealing with here is what is in a person's heart, not what is in his hand.

I understand that the Priest was shot and killed when he attacked the shooter with a knife. Now there is a hero for us all.

May the departed souls be in peace.

This will keep happening when people stops being what they are. I wonder what stops US sikhs from getting armed?
If you have courage to fight gunmen, why can't you make it equal.

I hope it give some sense to my cousins and other people there to be ready for any event like this.

"May their soul rest in peace and God be with their families."

[confused and he made that mistake]

Is an understatement,...that person was insane a lunatic,I am sure American government has protected its civilians from the taliban, mujahideen where most of the other countries have failed especially in India, however they have to realize there are but other types who may harm innocents especially non American's and I don't believe that Americans cannot differentiate between the Sikh community and the Muslim's,its just another story where a person either under influence of narcotic drug's or alcohol killed people ruthlessly in the same way during the batman screening.

I don't believe that Americans cannot differentiate between the Sikh community and the Muslim's,
Actually, there are quite a few who cannot differentiate.
They see the beards and pagdi's and they think Muslim. That is the tragedy of it, some of these people have attached themselves to a cause and they don't even know who they are against. Many of them don't really care either. As long as they person is different from them, they will target them.

Of course this is true. "Racism" 'has nothing to do with it, in the sense of institutionalized or widespread racism.
There are nutcase groups ---the "New Black Panther Party" comes to mind--- but you can't lock them up for deranged racist talk.If they actively and provably plan violence (and I hope they are being monitored), sure. But short of that, they can indulge in their whining of losers.

The US is the least racially-biased most-welcoming multi-ethnic country in the world. We are "a nation of (legal)immigrants". But every country has nuts. This guy was one. But just one. Broader hypotheses or conclusions cannot rationally be drawn.

My apologies if my post seemed to indicate that this is the norm in the US. In the 31 years that I have lived here, I have encountered overt racism about three times and all of them were relatively minor incidents. Americans in general are very tolerant and open minded.
