This happened with a .223...would the same apply for a .44 Magnum?

Of course it would. Probably to less effect though because the .223 generates more energy than a .44 mag - and has superior penetration.
The person concerned is an absolute idiot - If you whack the primer of a cartridge with a hammer it is likely to ignite. That, after all, is what it is supposed to do.
If you have to pull bullets from `live` cartridges invest in a kinetic bullet puller. Looks rather like a hammer but pulls the bullet and stores the powder without igniting the primer.

Thanks, Grumpy.

The guy in the story must have been real broke to scrounge brass from unfired ammo to sell to recyclers  .

And real stupid to be using a hammer to remove the bullets from the case! Just when you think you have seen/ heard of the stupidest thing possible... something like this comes along...

It`s actually quite encouraging you know - no matter how stupid a thing you might do you can take heart from the knowledge that someone, somewhere is being a lot more stupid ! Using a hammer to knock bullets out of live cartridges just takes the biscuit though.
