Good grief, what a dreadful old hag! I doubt that even a 10 gallon purple enema could wipe that self-satisfied, smug smile off of her face.

1. In my youth, I read plenty of Anarchist literature. Alexander Berkman, for example, can at least make Anarchy and the uselessness of having a police force and locking up criminals sound reasonable, without sounding like a shrewish scold like this old owl. The trouble is, the Anarchist argument depends on people being innately good and reasonable, something any fool who's spent much time in public can disprove in a heartbeat. If this assumption were so, it would hardly matter whether we had anarchy, democracy, republic, monarchy, or any other form of government. I think Ramachandra Guha has it right: governments exist essentially to settle conflicts between the members of the society it governs. I agree with this, and with the notion that if no conflict ever existed, there would be no need for a government to settle them. Unfortunately, such societies only exist on the Big Rock Candy Mountain discussed in children's lore, not reality.

2. I lived next to an organized crime-ruled city, the same one my Dad grew up in. Like many American cities, this one changed racially, and the people who supported and winked at the previous regime moved out when the new one took over. Then they cited crime as the justification for their prejudiced views of the new regime. I have a familiarity, both from my Dad's first-person account, and from my own experiences, with living in the sort of society that this numbskull thinks she so cutely advocates. I have seen what she advocates, and it is not something I or most other people desire. The sad story for her is that, like most demagogues, she attempts to defend a simple shortcut around the requirement of vigilance, hard work, and wise thinking that is needed to have a "good society". There are always people who think that some simple formula will make all of life's problems disappear, but history has shown us time and time again that utopia is something people write about, like tooth fairies and easter bunnies. Societies that have sought panaceas in formulas ended up like Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia, both states that started out being ruled by barking goons who appealed to its citizens with simplistic formulas. I submit that the price tag of this kind of thinking, while initially seeming to show promise, is the most expensive sort of government of all.

"The Mob" is organized crime. It can take place in or outside of government. I cannot see how organized crime outside of government is preferable to that which occurs inside government.

Indeed, one of the main objectives of organized crime is to "buy" judges, legislators, and those in executive positions (like police and prime ministers).

The goal of organized crime is to make money and gain power, using any means. This differs from the job of the government, which in both of our cases consists of representatives WE elect. This isn't so of the "Mob". Morality and considering the well-being of others is NOT a consideration to organized crime, although they may wish to appear so if it gains them an advantage in their quest for money and power.

Sure, maybe some things she says do sound right -- so, does this differ from the examples of Hitler and Stalin? No, they'd throw a little truth to add credence to their sales pitch, as well, just like any good used car salesman will do when selling a lemon to someone. Looking for a little truth is a barrel of rotten apples is exactly why these sorts of cranks and wingnuts include little bits of truth in their attempt to hoodwink people.

But looking at this old hag, I can imagine some of the teachers I had as a child, and note that she appears to exist on a diet of prune juice and drain cleaner.

Spin buddy,

I admit there is a certain amount of humor in what she is saying but nothing anyone should take seriously.

If organized crime has taken over, that means that government has failed and there is no one who can curb the excesses that the syndicates are capable of. You want to see what the rule of organized crime can be like? Take a look at Mexico today.
I think for any one living in the affected areas; the days of the lazy, corrupt government that they had before would seem like paradise compared to what they have now.
