Indians For Guns

Owners/ Moderators,

I was just wondering, since many of us are fond of the written and printed word, why not start a section on book reviews? Most of us have specific likes and 'streams' that we like to follow and it would be helpful if someone acquires a particular book, reads it and writes a short commentary on it with information on where to purchase it, at what price and it's content.

There are enough people here who follow subjects not only on firearms but anything remotely connected with them.

I feel this would be really helpful to members.

Good suggestion.

Here's a book I pickd up yesterday from a road side stall in Flora Fountain Area in Mumbai. Got it for about INR 500 which is half the price of what it would be available at any book store.

The World Encyclopedia Of Swords and Sabres by Harvey J Withers- An Authoritative History and Visual Directory of Edged Weapons from around the world, shown in more than 800 stunning Colour Pictures.

What I liked about the book:

1) Nice large coffee table type of glossy book with very good quality and detailed almost 800 colour photographs of Swords from around the world and from the Bronze age to the present. This book traces the development of swords right from the stone age flint weapons to the ones used in the bronze Age, Egypt, to the Viking Swords, the English Broad Swords, to the Persian Shamsheer, the Indian Talwar and the Japanese Katana. Has about 3 to 4 pages devoted to each period and type of words.The heart of the book has fully illustrated swords directory with more than 400 examples of swords from all around the world with a good quality photograph, date, origin and size and length.

A good read and a must have reference guide for any Edged Weapons Enthusiast or a collector.

And I have seen a lot of book on Firearms in Most of the stores in Mumbai Oxford, Crosswords, Granth, Landmark etc, but Books on Edged weapons, Knives, Swords very very rare. Please do contribute to this thread, boosk are great source of information for people who are not fortunate enough to handle these and learn about them first hand.

I think you guys know why this thought came up in my mind!

I also miss my days in Bombay (yes, to me it's always 'Bombay' not Mumbai) when I would walk along the Central Telegraph Office and Flora Fountain and browse books, and if I was lucky and had some money then I'd buy a book of two. Crossword and the like have come in lately. The only option was Strand Bookshop in Fort. Another old haunt was the New and Secondhand Bookshop in Kalbadevi. You guys ought to try it.

katanaji, if i remember correctly, a book thread has been started in approx 2007. please add to that so we dont have duplicate threads.

Katanaji, I too have some fond memories of visiting the street side stalls starting from VT till Flora fountain with my grandfather and buying these second hand books, These sellers have been moved out by the muncipality and a very few remain. There,s this street in Kolkotta where I hear you can source any book you want, I want to source the book you mentioned by Feigel On Damascus and PS Rawsons Indian Sword.

Never seen this store you mentioned in Kalbadevi, will check it out. With Huge book stores like the Landmark in Lokhandwala and In Phoenix Mills (Few thousand Square feet each) the buisness of sellers like Strand has taken a hit.

This was a great idea. If the seperate section's not immediately feasable, we should continue in this thread itelf. Lot of information and knowledge sharing can happen right here.
