Shoot or get the boot?

Ok, so you have a firearm so what......

I have heard of instances where people who have had firearms for their protection did NOT use them when the situation arose - to add to it they ended up losing it to the attacker. so just having a firearm does not mean that you are protected - all the training in the world with the most sophisticated firearms will not help if you do not react when the moment calls for it.

so how do you prepare yourself for such a situation.

Apart from Hunting (where legal - or at least try some crows or rats), 1st person video games - like- Blood, Shadow warrior, Max Payne, etc etc. - will prepare you for such a situation.
Trainings for such real life scenarios might exist but how many of us have the time or resources to use it.

Your comments please.

best shooting game now Battlefield Bad Company 2, that is as close to real situation as it only can be definitely can teach you do not try to do certain things. Your adversary in this game not computer bots but other real people.

here is few things I would like to share.

1. first take cover, then shoot, even if your adversary did not see you, do not shot if you do not have solid cover.

2. if I have cover I will shot in his back, without saying a word, as someone said - those who believe in fair gun fight all in graves.

why it is so important to take cover?

make experiment with some of your friend, with use of some toy gun, he standing with his back to you. you are giving him command -drop your gun . some research show that in 80% he will hit you and you not. reactivity gap. same thing if you shot first and if you do not have cover, chances very good he will shoot back few time too.

have you seen Battlefield Bad Company 2 ?? it is perfect training simulator, people who sit in different countries shot each other. You cant get shooting skills from the game, but it can teach how to not get shot. In real live people do perfectly same stupid things, what they will do in computer games.
To learn what not do is already huge thing. rest will be what do things.

I play lots of shooting games (wifey is threatening to blow up my PC), the difference is that in the games, you are sitting in a chair, moving your gun in a wide 180 degrees arc with a 2 inch movement of your wrist. The theory (what to / not to do) can be learnt, but the actual body movements will not be learnt. E.g. you can't do a Max Payne "shoot-dodge" (anyway, there is no concept of "bullet time" in real life). Imagine shooting people through the head with a Desert Eagle (or IOF .32) while taking a headlong dive! Plus the games have a crosshair option, in real life you don't have that. Just like playing Age of Empires does not make you a Napoleon, Battlefield and Max Payne and Mafia cannot make you a commando! Moreover, the games get so addictive, you forget all about the physical fitness aspect!! (I know from first hand experience  ).

Better, IMHO, is to take a heavy toy gun and practice, at home. Airsoft / paintball can work well (airsoft is better, you might not want paint on your walls and furniture. Obviously, eye and other protection devices are required. Even 100 Rs. Chinese-made airsofts available in toy shops will do the trick.

Also, probably fighting videos in conjunction with the above, plus of course, someone else to play the opponent.

Cheers!

games can teach a lot of things, and that teaching has immense value in real world including military. In Russia for example gamers sorted out of other young recruits and send to serve in armies managing nuclear rockets, radars and anti aircraft rockets and other such things. they already trained do such things by playing games. Only difference it is real rockets and real aircrafts. Number of remote controlled weapons growing exponentially, it is operated quite well in same way as in game.

As of street fight talk, it can teach you certain ABC things too - you in open with gun you are dead, you against 2 or 3 guys you are dead, you are frozen - you are stationary target you are dead. IN game as in real live you have to decide what to do in each moment and because game provide model for study possible situations and possible outcome it can teach you which kind of things will have 100% bad outcome.
