Educate an American! Obama and "sniffer dogs"
You may have noted the presence of the elected President of the US in India recently.
It has been covered in the US that when he visits Mahatma Gandhi's samadhi (does this mean house or memorial?), only hi-tech devices and manpower will be used to secure the area. Apparantly, In 2006, the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Tushar Gandhi, had said that allowing sniffer dogs at the samadhi was a mark of disrespect to the father of the nation, so ,uh, they are not allowed?
However, there are explosive identification police dogs in India. Without making any political jokes (as would definitely be the case if I posted this on my US Birdhunting and gun board), what the story? Seems odd to me. Do Indians not like dogs? But if you do make political jokes, make them funny.

Dear Steve,
A samadhi is a memorial. The Gandhi memorial is in a place called Rajghat. The belief is that the sanctity of the place will be lost if sniffer dogs are allowed in and around the memorial. It's not that sniffer dogs are not used in India or Indians dislike dogs. Of course, they are used for bomb detection in public places and so on. But in places like memorials and religious centres like temples, churches and mosques, the presence of these dogs is generally disliked by the people who own them or are in-charge. So, security agencies use high-tech equipment in place of sniffers in such cases.
Regards,
Ebenezer

Steve,
In India there are certain norms prescribed for entering holy/sacred/religious places to preserves its sanctity as I am sure there are in other parts of the world. They certainly are stricter in India. Now if you allow dogs to enter, they obviously are not going to be able to distinguish between the pillar of a temple and a lamp post. Before some dog lover attacks me by saying his/her dog is never going to do something like that I would like to say that not all dogs are well trained. The image of a dog desecrating Gandhis samadhi by pissing in the vicinity or on it, probably lead Tushar Gandhi to say what he said.

You are generalizing and going by stereotypes generated by media that will always report the abnormal.I am sure you would be screaming racial discrimination if some of the stereotypes about Indians are applied to you.sudhakardm wrote:In India, a person loves his parents, his wife and children, then the pets like dogs cats nnnnn. But in the west like the Americas and Europre, it is the other way around.

Those challenging Charles Darwin theory of evolution once asked him whether he was related to the big apes from his father's side or his mother's side.

I do not want to sound harsh, but if only you gave a good thought to what you wrote , it would not come across as offensive as it does now. Please do not come up with posts like these.Sorry,if I offended you.sudhakardm wrote:In India, a person loves his parents, his wife and children, then the pets like dogs cats nnnnn. But in the west like the Americas and Europre, it is the other way around.

Re: Educate an American! Obama and "sniffer dogs"
Hmm. Well, based on these comments, it seems that the Ghandi Memorial may have sort of semi-religious overtones that would make this situation more understandable. I note, for example, Mr. Pooh's refererence to "norms prescribed for entering holy/sacred/religious places to preserves its sanctity" and ebenezer's of "memorials and religious centres like temples, churches and mosques". I don't think anyone would describe Mount Vernon (George Washington's home) or Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's) or Lincoln Memorial in that way , (possibly The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, though), and I am certain that explosives dogs woud not be banned.
I was not, needless to say, being critical. It just seemed a little odd to me.
Thanks for the responses to sudhakardm's comment, by the way.

Every place has its own ways Steve007. We all have our little oddities. Let us not pass a judgement depending on this.

I would like to say a few words, the dog used by US security agencies for safe visit of Mr.President OBAMA might be having an extra nose to sniff out the bombs I mean to say an extra nose exclusively for sniffing bombs only.
