Are there many tornados in India? With the heat and in certain weather conditions, there must be some... Just wondered if you had many of them, where most were encountered, and what time of year most of them occurred?
Thanks!

Tim,
As far as I know,not/none in the scale of those we see in US on TV/Films.I really do not remember having ever experienced one except a few that filled my eyes and mouth with grit.
. Sorry, I am not much of a help.
Best-
Vikram

Well, we've enough people who cause more destruction. So The Big Guy has spared us from tornadoes, I guess.

I think these are cases of journalists erroneously using the word instead of "cyclone" which is the correct terminology for what we see in India.

Hi Yaj,
what you say can be true... however, in the ToI article:
From the extent of twisted trees and poles, the depth of thundercloud and volume of devastation, it appears to be a tornado," said G C Debnath, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Alipore
... he does say "appears to be" though
Also, a list of Asian tornadoes and tornado outbreaks, from wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_As ... _outbreaks
... atleast six in India, and fifteen in the sub-continent.

I guess you are right Rahul. Apparently the East coast of India does get the occasional tornado.

Thank you, gentlemen! This whole business got started a few years back, when I read there were tornados in Britain. Well, stupid me, I'd always thought of tornados as being something that went on here -- of course similar conditions would cause them anywhere. We just had a few rip through some towns south of us and I thought, what with the heat and maybe the right weather conditions, there would be some in India as well. Thanks for the links! Great reading!
One thing though, about the Telegraph article: I'd never really thought of Orissa as being Southern India...
