The Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad was labelled a disaster but it stoked the fire in a 11-year-old local boy to be a shooter one day. On Thursday the boy, now well known as Asher Noria, won the gold in men's junior double trap in the 50th World Shooting Championships in Munich, equalling the world record.
After Gagan Narang's exploits, it was another Hyderabadi's turn to climb the podium at the Olympic shooting range as the 17-year-old Noria went about his job with clinical precision. He began with a 49/50 and continued in the same vein as he scored 49 and 48 in the last two rounds to equal the record score of 146 set by William Chetcuti of Cyprus in 2004.
"I came here to win the gold. Everything fell in place today and I could equal the world record. It has been a great season for me as two months back I won the junior World Cup gold in Suhl, Germany," an elated Noria told TOI from Munich after returning from the dope control station.
Asher, whose family runs Estelle fashion jewellery business, is leaving for the US to pursue an engineering course in the prestigious Georgia University of Technology. "First I will join the University for my studies and will also continue with my shooting. I will return to compete in the Nationals," he said.
Noria said World No. 5 Ronjan Sodhi has supported him a lot. "He is my mentor and I love to train with him. He helps me in many ways giving technical inputs and provides all the mental support during competition," he said.
"He shot an amazing score. Had he competed in the seniors category he would have reached the final," national coach Sunny Thomas said after watching Noria in action.
The silver medal went to Alessandro Chianese of Italy who shot 141 (48, 47, 45) and bronze to Filip Praj of Slovakia 140 points2 (48, 47, 45). Noria's teammates Shayan Masood came 7th with a score of 137 while Ankur Mittal ended 18th with a tally of 107 points as India clinched the fourth place in team championship.
Sodhi finishes 23rd
In the senior section, Sodhi never recovered from a poor first round, which saw him miss five birds in the first four stations, as he compiled a below par score of 139 in the preliminary round of men's double trap.
Sodhi, who was a strong medal contender, followed his first round of 42 with scores of 48, 49 but the damage was already done.

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.
