Jindal OKs guns in places of worship

PTI, Jul 9, 2010, 02.20am IST

HOUSTON: Indian-American governor Bobby Jindal has agreed to allow concealed handguns inside Louisiana’s churches, mosques and synagogues, prompting anti-gun violence activists up in arms against the controversial move.

Anyone wishing to carry a concealed weapon in a church will have to take an extra eight hours of tactical training each year. Jindal signed the bill moved by Republican Henry Burns on Tuesday. The bill will go into effect on August 15.

Churches, synagogues and mosques choosing to allow concealed carry will have to inform their congregations of the decision. Supporters of the measure said it can be a deterrent against criminal activity in church and will give an option to pastors to incorporate handguns into security plans.

Bobby Jindal has been doing himself a lot of good politically with his determined forceful "take charge" response to the Gulf Oil spill, and his pointed criticism of the federal response. He has gained great national exposure and contrasted himself sharply with President Dither. He was a fine Congressman pre-Governorship and is a real possiblity for a Vice Presidential spot in 2012.

This is something good. AFAIK in India, the carrying of firearms in Gurudwaras is also allowed. Many years ago in Punjab I saw some devotees/Nihangs going in/out carrying with them shotguns/rifles.

Bobby Jindal, passing law to carry weapons in place of worship is neither here nor there! What is really jarring, and I am quite sure, that what I have to say here, will strike a similar chord in most reader’s hearts and minds, is the fact, that society at large, has degenerated to the extent, that weapons are perceived to be required for self protection, even in the House of God!
Correct me if I am still naive enough to believe, that the House of God should at least, at the very least, be sacrosanct enough to abjure violence and means to carry out the same. Then pray, I do ask of myself and all human kind, is the value left in the House of God itself?

After revolt of 1857 in India, it was also customary among Christians in India to carry rifles along with them to the Church. In fact many churches had placeholders for rifles made in front of every wooden bench. It is also customary among Sikhs to carry arms along with them into their place of worship. So are you also telling that degeneration has also taken place in these cases? :)

Take a chill pill and remember Chacha Ghalib.......
"Saaki ya to pee lene de masjid mein mujhe sharaab, ya fir woh jagah bata ki jahaan par khuda na ho...."

And, errr, correct me if I'm wrong, but more blood of innocents has been spilt in history in the name of God than in any other cause

True more blood has been spilt in the name of God. Actually 'intolerance' is the cause. a case of meri kameez teri kameez se jada saphed.

I agree, not only intolerance but also ignorance. Would like to quote the following:

Love springs eternal!
When I learnt the lesson of Love
I dreaded going to the mosque.
Hesitantly, I found a temple
Where they beat a thousand drums.
Love springs eternal! Come!

I am tired of reading holy books,
Fed up with prostrations good.
God is not in Mathura or Mecca.
He who finds Him is enlightened!
Love springs eternal! Come!

Burn the prayer mat, break the beaker!
Quit the rosary, chuck the staff!
Lovers shout at the top of their voices:
Break all rules that tie you down!
Love springs eternal! Come!

Heer and Ranjha are united:
While she searches for him in orchards,
He is in her warm embrace!
She has her love, she is fulfilled!
Love springs eternal! Come!

Good move given the present situation.
Well I wouldn't mind much, but thats just me, since most of our Hindu Gods do carry some kind of weapon or the other anyway.

And I guess It's better than wearing a locket/pendant for 'protection'(No offense meant to wearers) :) .

Sanatan dharma has a long tradition of having firearms in the place of worship.

However it was never for protection. I mean maybe in spirit but not as a need.

Even today on navratri (both) and dushahra lakhs of people get their weapons blessed by mataji and even today esp in south India, Navmi-Dashmi is still called 'aayudh-pooja' (worship weapons).

Intrestingly: Bajbarang bali or Hanumaanji is the patron of 'akhara' (which traditionally also trained sword fighting and other martial arts- not just wrestling) and he is always shown with a gada which is a weapon and always in a mode of some feat of strength etc (saumya roop moorti in temples is uncommon).

But one may not carry weapons in his temple (traditionally-its not a law). Mataji on the other hand has no such reservations.
Trishool for Shankarji is fine.
