Mumbai IFGians Go Leather Hunting!

Hi Kanwar, Sorry, didn't snap the hide before I cut it, but will take and post photos showing the thickness, as I assume that's what you'll be interested in.

But a word of advice: this is too darn thick for normal sheaths. It was proper hell to cut it across the grain. At some points, I had to hold the hide vertically on the ground, and literally hammer (with a mallet) the awl through, sharpening the awl every few minutes. Along the grain, it was almost easy as pie! I am using the word "grain" as an analogy to wood, as the "cuttability" (to coin a word) at right angles was totally different, just like wood!

I am making a sheath for my machete with this, as I don't think I at least can cut a curved line through the leather, hence khukri sheath and buck sheath are out. The machete sheath will be a simple rectangle, the leather holed with a drill machine and tied together with leather strips cut from the thinner leather piece. I did use the thinner piece to turn out a couple of cellphone cases (for me & better half), a couple of cardholders (ditto), and a simple wallet for me. Will post pics "shortly".
Cheers!

EssDee
