boarding schools in India aka "publicc schools" have been based on british schools and incorporate very british traditions including caning.

Please note that now it has been banned in ALL schools here including Eton, harrow, Rugby etc. whereas we Indian public school products still feel proud of this tradition.

Please also note the following:

Being able to afford to send a child to boarding indicated an affluent social class.
Research has shown that being born in an affluent social class in itself makes one more likely to be wealthy and successful irrespective of caning.

One must change with the times. I have heard of old people in the villages talking like: " i never went to school/college. I did all right for myself, didnt I?" Doesnt make it right.

Suppose the kid didn't have the guts to smash the Principal, but instead went home quietly and slung himself from the ceiling fan. Would we still be having this debate?

I wanted to put something related to ragging also, but desisted.

There are many possibilities of what could have happened but what has happened is what we are discussing here.

Ragging is an entirely different issue.
