Still doesnt explain how you shoot 2300 yards on a 1200 yard range.winnie_the_pooh wrote:Forgot to add the link.Have given it below

Additionally Gale passed away around 96. He made a ton of excellent barrels, and components for rifles. No doubt about it.
A 215 grain bullet would go to a walking velocity by 1200. I am tired right now and dont want to run numbers..
700 yard shots.. sure. That is point blank compared to 2300 yards. Shooting a SMLE at 2300.. without a scope. Sure try it.
If you cant.. I am happy to sponsor a trip over, and if you dont hit the target just re-imburse my expenses. Try looking at a man sized target at 2300.. the foresight of any production rifle will obscure the target. Then take into account that the most optimistic military rifles have garduations to about 1000. From there figure out the hold over and make the shot.
Go ahead put a scope on. Use a 20 MOA base. You will typically run out of elevation on all but the most purpose built scopes at about 1400 yards or less with the .303 cartridge.
Vernier sights.. sure go ahead. Just let me know where I can get one graduated for 2300.
I use a NightForce NF 12-42x56 more often than not. Let me tell you at 42x the target is more visible.. so is mirage. And mirage will cause you to misread wind. Which is an absolute b**ch to read. Just beacuse its blowing 10 mph at 100 yards doesnt mean the same exists at 500, or 1000 or 1500 or 2000 let alone 2300.
Then at that range given the velocity drop you have the Coriolis Effect. Which essentially is the movement of the earth, and it will come into effect.
The Longest range I have shot ot is 1500 meters, on a 24x24 steel plate. All I can claim if the ability to hit it, post 3 foulers with my first shot. With a given load, in a given caliber in a rifle I know every detail of, from the torque setting on the scope ring to the torque setting on the rear tang screw. And even then I have to get the mirage, wind and calculation right.
So believe what you may. I still do not believe the 2300 yard shoot. I ahve found no evidence of it on the Bisley site, nothing other than anecdotal evidence on the net, and certainly have not heard about it on the LR shooting circles.
I am not a renkowned shot, nor recognised anywhere. I do have a fair amount of experince in the accuracy arena (not competitive) and do shoot a wide variety of calibers to understand what a 2300 yard shot will take. The .303 is not it. Prove me wrong and take up the challenge.

MoA,
I just found that article and posted it.My shooting is generally limited to 100mtrs and at the most 300.Finding a range to shoot at 100 mtrs is much easier than finding one of 300mtrs.I have no practical experience of shooting beyond 300 mtrs.I defer to your knowledge on this. The idea was not start an argument.

Winnie... not an argument. Discussion.
What you're asking from the .303 is akin to trying to use an airsoft to shoot a soda can at 300 meters. With open sights.

If I can hit it a soda can with a center fire rifle at 100 mtrs the entire world will not hear the end of itMoA wrote:Winnie... not an argument. Discussion.

Personally i wouldnt shoot a .308 at that range, but that is a different story.
Saw and shot .308 match rifles being used at bisley with peep sites. being used for 1200 yards.
(I didnt use it at 1200 yards; but it was zeroed for 1200 yards; I used it at 200 yards and yes, after adjusting the elevation)

Yes people do shoot a number of calibers at 1200, I just wouldnt want a .308, which doesnt mean that you cant use it.shooter wrote:Saw and shot .308 match rifles being used at bisley with peep sites. being used for 1200 yards.Personally i wouldnt shoot a .308 at that range, but that is a different story.
