Drive a Hyundai Elantra CRDI fitted with a stock K&N filter. Also own a Bullet Standard 350 from the past 12 years and love it the most.

Shamsher,

What Abhijeet said is absolutely right. A MM540 would any day be a better choice than a Gypsy. The Gypsy is not built to last but the MM540 is.

TenX,

The new Bolero CRDE would be ideal for you. Good mileage with low maintainence costs. Let me know if you decide on it. I have a couple of friends at a Mahindra dealership who might be able to get you a good deal.

.. Thanks a ton Prabath. I also liked the Invader to a large extent. So much so that if I buy a new vehicle, it will probably be the Invader. I am actually looking at the corporation auctions to pick up a cheap deal and have it modified to suit my style... :)

Delhi

Mahindra Bolero SLX 2008 - and I have driven it everywhere off road, mud, slush, sand no problem
My favourite - Jeep CJ3B 1976 with original petrol engine. Original transfer case, 4x4 system, topless for the winter sun!

Waiting for Toyota Fortuner Diesel to be launched in March.

Patna

Mahindra Scorpio - 2008 - has already crossed a river bed
Fiat Premier Padmini 1981 and still running !

Dubai

Toyota Landcruiser VXR 4700 cc V8 Petrol ( 2004 )

Diesel Gypsy conversion

End result is never too good. Constant and frequent problems, but even so with my jeep, it is not per fect and failures do occur frequently.

However 4 X Gyspsys fitted with a second hand Nissan CD 17 Diesel engine and original 4x4 Maruti drive system and doing very well off road here. Two of them even have an A/C in the front cabin.

Black Bolero Glx. The one with the old peugot engine. Actually goes everywhere without a 4X4.
It's now doing its sixth year.

Well my fascination and affillition with cars started a long time ago and over the years have driven everything from M800, Omni, Contessa, M-1000, Ambasadors (both petrol and diesel versions), a Tata Sumo (pre 2000 model), ......... but presently my garage consists of a 2006 model Swift petrol (in silver colour), a 1997 Maruti 800 the carboureted version (in yellow colour) and a 1996 Esteem non MPFI (in silver colour). I fully agree that the M-800 is a terrific car and I often use it as a rural off roader and it has never let me down.

thanx Tenx  .. Well if you are in the districts you have to often depend upon good 'ol Maruti since all other manufacturers don't seem to be interested in opening shops here. Plus you can even get Maruti 800 parts even in a "paan Shop" even in a never heard village. Forgot the advertisement by Maruti that you get a service centre even in Ladakh  .

I quite agree with you. I had an 800 before, then an esteem, and now back to Alto. Its surely the easiest and most economical to maintain :)

Toyota Innova, Fiat Palio Stile(bought it jus a month back. I think I made a good decision coz the swift's too common), Tata Indica(will be put on sale soon) and plannin to buy the Ford Endevour or the Pajero(any good 10-15 lakh 4WD to be precise), Dad's Royal Enfield 500cc military issue green colour its been wid dad from time immemorial his college days I think. I really want to get the Bullet modified into a chopper but dad gets sentimental with it often.
