I have always had and loved kukris. They are my favorite blades. I think they are probably the first Tactical blades ever made and a design that's timeless. Thus my avatar reflects the same.

I own one, presented to my father by a Gurkha regt. officerin the 60's. Though the blade is now little blackish, it still cuts deep and true. And what balance!

Doc's avatar comes, I recall, as a movie about a reporter (named Kolchak, played by Daren McGavin) who follows murder cases and comes up against a vampire. I think that the made for tv movie co starred Carol Linley.

Re: What your 'Avatar' says about you..
You are right timmy, the Kolchak character originated in a novel, The Kolchak Papers, written by Jeff Rice. Kolchak:The Night Stalker was an American television series that aired on ABC around 1974 .timmy wrote:Doc's avatar comes, I recall, as a movie about a reporter (named Kolchak, played by Daren McGavin) who follows murder cases and comes up against a vampire. Metaphorically speaking, (I like to think that) I slay a vampire or two from time to time in my medical practice.

Doc, this is a digression from the topic (please forgive me for doing what comes naturally), but I also recall seeing McGavin in another made-for-tv movie around that time, also. In it, he played a soldier named Gallery who was isolated on a Pacific Island with a soldier from an Far East Asian nation. The idea was that the two nations had agreed to settle their differences by a fight between the two combatants.
As with your vampire movie, I won't ruin the show by telling anymore about it, but I've often thought of Gallery's gun in this movie. (This is why it is a loosely connected subject relevant to a gun board!) Gallery/McGavin was equipped with a weapon that was two submachine guns welded together and operated by one trigger. As the story went, they set up one barrel to shoot ball and the other to shoot shot. I question how effective something like that would be in jungle fighting, but it is an intriguing thought. As I recall the show, it sure enough looked interesting when they fired it!
Doc, it's interesting to me that you are a "Doc": I have a number of South Asian friends who are in Med School and also who are applying. I worked at a Med School for awhile and met them -- got one interested in guns with my RFI 2A. He's very busy right now (as you know), but a good prospect for adding to our cause here at IFG!

Mine keeps on changing as per my mood. From blades to wrestling (for some drama in my mundane life) to right now, " What's up, Doc??". Still a kid at heart.

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

Interesting post hvj1.
My "avatar" reminds me of the fantastic time I had in the African wilderness.
It also gives me hope that one day our nation will take better care in preserving our natural resources, flora and fauna.
