Actually it was George Mallory, the original legend.
This happened in new york in 1922 after the failed everest attempt.
He answered "because its there".
This response is also considered to be "the most famous 3 words in the history of mountaineering".
though some historians believe it was misquoted by the journalists and that Mallory never said it, there has been no conclusive proof that he didnt say it and all new york newspapers the now famous quote.
