Looks like the cop fired in self protection and intent of maiming the aggressor. But the use of force must be both reasonable and actually necessary, from the video it looks unreasonable.

One must have a very strong reason to assault a Police Officer, in uniform.
By looking at the video, their does not seem to be a legitimate cause.
Whatever the situation, how can one man-handle a Police Officer.
Maybe shooting the assailant was not justified in this particular instance.
But this is difficult to say.
No sane person would shoot unless absolutely compelled.
Also the Police Officer had enough presence of mind to only injure the assailant.
He did not shoot to kill.
The Cop was attacked by 3 people and the women continued her assault,
Even after one of the attackers was fired upon.
In defense of the Police Officer,
I would add that the 3 assaulted him in the presence of several other police men,
Hence they were not scared or deterred.
One will have to go deeper to understand if the shooting was justified.

SOP not permits any police men to draw weapons and fire on the basis of merely some hot arguments. Firing on unarmed civilian is not as per protocol

I can not play the video now.
So far I can recall that the cops were almost chased and then warning shots were fired.
SOPs are there but situation makes the difference.
"Trigger happy police " ...this is overstatement.

From the the video it does not seem justified for the policeman to have drawn the weapon from his holster in the first place. There were many policemen on the scene and they could have easily overpowered the civilians and taken them into custody without having to use their weapon. I don’t see how the policeman will escape this charge.

The questuon is why do cops need guns with real bullets ( they can use rubber bullets) if their true intention is only to apprehend the offender of law.. And if the " so called" situation is " escalating" then the " cop" always has the option to call for " the squad"..as backup... Which should be made capable ro handle such situation... With either brute force, tazers or live ammunations and things as such.. Squad should be the last resort.

Looks like the cop was attacked and his weapon could have been snatched by that belligerent youth.
Of course, IDK whether he shot out of his superior advantage or as a desperate self-defense measure.
The victim was constantly challenging the cop to shoot, while attacking him. That said, perhaps, a good hard upper cut to the jaw may have sufficed. Anyway, I feel maybe the cop can't be blamed completely...(lawyers will know whether it will attract the charge of attempt to culpable homicide, or some other charge). After all, being a cop, he is licensed to shoot even unperceived threats, while using a licensed firearm for other citizens is a hassle. I mean, a civilian in a same situation would be facing a hard time (especially, if it was an unlicensed weapon)

However, I wonder, what would be the repercussions, if a civilian in India did the same thing with a licensed weapon against armed criminals...let alone trigger-happy cops?

Perhaps, his colleagues wanted to just stand by and watch. Speaks volumes about his colleagues' psychology and overall frame of mind.

Better an ugly trial than a nice burial

OR
Better judged by 12 than carried by 6

The wound was not serious. The target person was what the military call "walking casualty"

Good job, when the police man feels he is going to get overpowered and can loose his weapon, which can be used on him , can fire in self deference, he did fire a warning shot but no response and then did a conscious decision to fire on thigh, lucky for the guy it did not rip any of his major vessels or his testes.

So they can end up facing criminals with real bullets?
Regarding the video - sounds harsh but he was asking for it (no pun intended).
