Ukraine Learns The Value Of An Armed Citizenry, But Far Too Late
As Ukraine was replaced by puppet government in 2014, it was evident that some day it is going to be invaded by Russia. Or if these was retaliation from other countries then NATO and US would have also joined, for evident reasons that the world economy is currently in shit.
Gun laws in Ukraine are not as strict as in EU. Mostly people from higher middle class and with contact can get a firearm license other than government officials. Therefore, only 1 in 10 or 15 persons in Ukraine owned firearms like bolt action and shotguns (we've similar limitations here in India), which are of almost not effective in military style operations like war.
This restriction on firearms has been got stricter during Covid as the people were frustrated with new norms coming and almost suffocating them to death. So the frustrated citizens do not rebel with the government mandates.
Ukraine is surrounded by Russia from all sides and Kyiv the capital will be captured last. For last resort Ukraine has been calling its citizens, then foreign citizens (with no military experience) to volunteer the army.
If Ukraine (or any other country) has equipped their citizens with right knowledge and training for using firearms, Russia may not have been able to invade at all.

Usual anti gun politics- "Don't let citizens have guns till the politicians need cannon fodder to protect themselves". How is a citizen supposed to fight a well trained army with 1 or 2 days training? Read a report where one soldier had just 16 rounds of shooting practice and he was deployed!
All those "guns are bad" media channels and politicians are now praising a beauty queen who picked up a AK. Now they won't admit the rational behind 2nd amendment and why it should be included in constitution of all countries. Once things calm down, they will again start their old rant. BTW, I don't think having armed and trained citizens would have deterred an invasion, but it would have definitely slowed it down. They had to restrict men between 18 to 60 years of age from fleeing the country, if these men were allowed to train atleast some of them would be confident enough to stand their ground.

There has been confirmed news that other then fighting the enemy the local gangs are settling old score with their rivals with the weapons that have been distributed among them. Every coin has two sides.

I have seen "confirmed news" too, but my judgment was that the sources of this "news" were highly questionable. TASS, RT, and "Daily Stormer" are a bit questionable for me.

In my opinion pitting the armed common citizen against one of the most modern and professional army is like putting Zelensky against Putin .

Local gangs is the keyword. They are already criminal, they would have used already available weapons to wreak havoc on their enemies anyway. Plus it seems highly unlikely that in such a dire time a sane person would take risk to settle their old scores when russies are hunting anyone with weapon. Each person is responsible for his/her own safety, to think that government or anyone else is responsible for the same is utopian.
