I thought I would bring this one back, probably because I'm hungry at the moment!

I have a question from the land of no coconut trees...

If one does not have a knife or tool with them, what is a good method to open a coconut?

Also, can/should you pull them off the tree or are the ones on the ground better for some reason?

Thanks everyone!

Seriously why the heck would someone want to change the taste of an already tasty fruit?
Why don't they go for mutton flavoured spinach?

Good old American knowhow: An electric drill and a plastic straw should do you.
A Milwaukee Saber saw should work too. If all else fails, a Black and Decker electric jigsaw would work.

Seriously though, for a huskless coconut (an older coconut - used for cooking, etc) we always used a hammer. Hold it above a glass or vessel to catch the water (juice) and crack it around the "equator"

For the young coconut, where you will just be drinking the juice, see this video below. Keep in mind that the one in the video has already been trimmed of most of the husk

You want a nice hard bottom (giggle)

Hi mark, so when you dont have the proper tools for the job, you just hand it over to your wife and wait for her to do the needful, one way ir the other!

Sd you can obviously make out, i am not married and wont get into trouble, but if you actually did that to your wife....

There was an action movie that came out in the early 90's titled "El Mariachi", about a wandering Mariachi singer (a musician who would play at bars, nightclubs, etc) who comes into this small Mexican town and the first place he stops is a small gas station type of store. He buys a coconut from the storekeeper who pulls one from a can filled with ice water and with one chop of a machete cuts off the top, puts a straw in it and hands it to him.

Anyway, I was wondering on how to get a drink if there is a coconut palm on the side of the road and I happened to have left my machete, hammer, and cordless drill back at home. I suspect someone has figured this out, and probably about 1500 years ago.

ABM, I think Naga meant Bhangra dance (since it was in ref to Hammerhead's post on Mark wearing turbans)!!!

Naga sahib, now THAT'S a recipe!

Mark, for the green tender coconuts, I haven't seen anyone opening them with anything other than a sharp, relatively heavy instrument. The ripe (brown) ones can be opened by smashing on a rock (which is how coconuts are broken in Hindu religious festivals), and quickly moving the coconut so that the water falls into a container. Being a bit gentle (a few smart raps rather than a record-breaking smash) ensures that most of the water is saved. Of course, if there's no rock nearby, one can offer one's head to the better half, as suggested by ABM!!
Cheers!
